Knowledge & Research

Research & Publications

Building knowledge about India's family heritage through rigorous, community-centred research and open publication.

Our Research Areas

The Foundation's research agenda covers 12 key areas of Indian family heritage. Research will be conducted in partnership with universities, independent scholars, and community organisations across India.

Indian Family Structures

How Indian family systems have evolved across time and region, with focus on joint, nuclear, and extended family patterns and the social forces that shape them.

Genealogy & Ancestry

Research into methods and practices for Indian genealogy, including oral genealogies, regional record systems, temple registers, and community lineage traditions.

Oral History

Methodology and practice of oral history collection in Indian languages and regional contexts, including archival standards and ethical frameworks.

Intergenerational Relationships

How knowledge, values, and heritage are transmitted — or lost — between generations within Indian families, and what enables or disrupts this transfer.

Senior Citizen Knowledge

The nature, scope, and depth of tacit knowledge held by India's senior population, and strategies for its respectful documentation and preservation.

Cultural Preservation

How communities preserve and actively transmit cultural practices, languages, rituals, and traditions, and the role of families as custodians of culture.

Social & Migration History

Family-level documentation of India's great internal migrations, social transformations, Partition histories, and community displacement narratives.

Traditional Knowledge

Agricultural, craft, culinary, medicinal, and environmental knowledge held within families and communities, and the risks posed by its undocumented loss.

Regional Languages

Endangered dialects and minority languages preserved primarily within families and communities, including documentation strategies and revitalisation efforts.

Changing Family Structures

The impact of urbanisation, education, digital technology, and economic mobility on family heritage transmission and intergenerational continuity.

Digital Heritage

Research into responsible digital preservation practices for family heritage in Indian contexts, including accessibility, longevity, and data sovereignty.

Indian Family Values

The nature, diversity, and transformation of values within Indian family systems — from traditional dharmic frameworks to contemporary adaptations.

Our Research Approach

All research undertaken by or in partnership with the Foundation is guided by three foundational principles — ensuring that knowledge creation is responsible, inclusive, and of genuine benefit to the communities we serve.

Community-Centred

Research is conducted with and for communities, not merely about them. Participants are partners in shaping research questions, processes, and outputs.

Ethically Grounded

Informed consent, privacy, dignity, and cultural sensitivity are non-negotiable principles in every stage of the research process.

Publicly Accessible

Findings will be published and shared as freely as possible, in multiple languages, so that knowledge returns to the communities that generated it.

Publications & Resources

Research outputs, guides, newsletters, and educational resources produced by the Foundation and its research partners.

Research Partnerships

The Foundation welcomes partnerships with universities, research institutions, NGOs, government bodies, and independent scholars working on Indian family, social, and cultural heritage. We believe that the best research emerges from collaboration across disciplines, institutions, and communities.

We are particularly interested in partnerships that amplify underrepresented voices, bridge academic and community knowledge, and make research findings genuinely accessible to the families whose stories are at the heart of our work.

In Planning

Bharat Family Heritage Research Centre

The Foundation plans to establish a dedicated Research Centre focused exclusively on Indian family and community heritage. The Centre will function as a knowledge hub for research, publication, and collaboration in this field — the first of its kind in India.

The Centre will be designed as an open and inclusive institution, welcoming scholars, community members, students, and practitioners who share a commitment to preserving the depth and diversity of India's family heritage.
