The Disappearing Generation
India's senior citizens are the last generation to hold living memory of pre-independence, partition, rural transformation, and family migration. Once gone, these stories are irretrievably lost.
A public-benefit organisation proposed to preserve India’s family heritage
The Bharat Family Legacy Preservation Foundation is a proposed public charitable organisation being established under the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act, 1950, with the purpose of preserving India’s extraordinary family heritage. We believe every Indian family carries within it an irreplaceable reservoir of memories, values, traditions, and knowledge that belongs to the whole of humanity.
The Foundation focuses on five core programmatic areas:

India faces a silent crisis — the accelerating loss of family heritage that no national institution currently addresses.
India's senior citizens are the last generation to hold living memory of pre-independence, partition, rural transformation, and family migration. Once gone, these stories are irretrievably lost.
Over 90% of Indian family histories, photographs, and oral traditions have never been formally documented. This represents an incalculable loss to culture and identity. [Placeholder statistic — to be verified]
Urbanisation, nuclear families, and digital distractions are accelerating the loss of intergenerational bonds. The pace of change outstrips the capacity of families to document their own stories.
There is no dedicated public institution in India focused on family-level (not just national) heritage preservation. Existing cultural bodies address monuments, art, and national history — not family stories.
Three foundational beliefs guide everything the Foundation does.
Every person's story, regardless of social status or prominence, deserves to be preserved. The history of ordinary families is as important as the history of kings and governments.
Families are the smallest and most important unit of heritage. The aggregate of family histories is the true fabric of a nation's identity. National heritage begins at home.
Documenting family heritage benefits the whole society, not just individual families. Preserved memories contribute to education, social cohesion, cultural continuity, and national identity.
To create a society in which every Indian family has the opportunity to preserve its history, memories, values, knowledge, relationships and heritage for future generations.
To preserve, document, protect, research, educate and create awareness about India’s family heritage, life stories, memories, values, traditions and intergenerational knowledge.
Eight values that shape every decision, programme, and relationship of the Foundation.
“We believe India’s families collectively hold an extraordinary reservoir of memories, experiences, values, traditions and knowledge. The Foundation seeks to preserve this human heritage through awareness, documentation, research, intergenerational dialogue and responsible use of technology — for the benefit of present and future generations of India.”
